Installing Ubuntu ‘Feisty Fawn’ (7.04) on a ThinkPad T40
This is a 32 page PDF document that explains how to install Ubuntu 7.04 on a ThinkPad T40. It is also applicable specifically to:
- T41 and T42 based on Radeon 75001 (Also applies to other T41/T42 and T43; just not exactly)
- X31 and X32
- R40, R50 and R51 based on Radeon 75001
And other systems of a similar era. A lot of the information will apply to any computer in fact; just that this guide is specifically tailored to the above machine.
Essentially, Ubuntu works great without any tweaking but this guide attempts to go into the details many guides omit on subjects like:
- Setting up automatic Dual Screen/Monitor Mirroring on external VGA port
- Enabling TV Out via S-Video
- Installing WINE (Windows) compatibility layer
And a whole bunch of other things. You are free to distribute this file but it’s better if you just link to this blog.
This is the initial version and in the interests of just getting it done, it’s not absolutely proof checked. The information should however be technically correct, though some of the language used has not been refined as yet so there may be an odd ‘murky’ bit where explanation is confused.

Installing Ubuntu ‘Feisty Fawn’ (7.04) on a ThinkPad T40
1 This isn’t a necessity, the instructions for TV and VGA Output are written with the Radeon 7500 and its drivers in mind; and as such some of the detail in these sections may require some ‘tweaks’ for suitability on Radeon 9000/9600/FireGL and Intel integrated graphics based ThinkPads.
